I tried running the hashfile executable and it seems ok -- give it a file name and it spits back a hash #; give it a non existant file name and it properly compains.

Thanks for the suggestion ... off to download a L&G gsdl and try reinstalling.

This sounds like an installation error - it is having trouble
running external programs. In this case, it seems that the program
(hashfile) is there, but running it doesn't return any useful
output. Check that $gsdl/bin/linux/hashfile exists, and is
executable, and doesn't give any error if you try to run it.
