The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set can be encoded in many ways, in HTML
metadata tags, RDF in HTML, as RDF, even SVG has metadata support!
A few are described on the DC site;
Support of Dublin Core by greenstone and GML is detailed in the developers
guide. It is also easy to extend(add to).
Greenstone also supports z39.50 - I believe this facility is experimental -
but it lets you search other databases (often library catalogues with MARC
OAI-MH(Open Archives Initiative- Metadata Harvesting) is also supported by
greenstone via a plugin. (Demo at www.nzdl.org)
Generally I find using the metadata facilities in greenstone pretty good-
but they do take a little getting used to - but it is well covered in the
'developers guide'. I recommend printing out the whole thing and keeping it
on your desk if you do any collection building with greenstone.
