1. The server keeps crashing on me every time I am working in the GLI.
This happens when I switch tabs or make a format change, or for no
apparent reason.  So every time I make a change and want to see the
results  I have to restart the sever.  The popup error message  is the
standard windows box "sever.exe has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of
something the information you were working on might be lost....click
here for more details"  The details are the code, but since I'm not a
programmer, I have no clue.  This only happens when the GLI is open.

Please check whether the VList format statement is empty. If so,  set it to default value in gli.

2. For the life of me I can't get the preview button to work.  The error
message is "This file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options
control panel."  I unfortunately am not able to determine what file
extension to use.  Also have tried to set this in the File > Preferences
> Connection box, but I don't what path I should be using.

you need to make  gli connect to the Greenstone server. In gli,  set File->Preferences->connection->Library Path to http://your_server_address/gsdl .
you can find your_server_address in the browser that connects to the Greenstone server
