Is there any way to set a password to restrict usage of a Greenstone
digital library?

The short answer is yes.

Please see this example collection.

Note the authentication directives in the collect.cfg file,

authenticatedocument
auth_groupdemo

If you just want to restrict access to the entire collection, you can use

authenticatecollection

You need to access the greenstone admin pages to set up passwords and
groups for authentication.
The default password for the admin pages is username: admin password: admin

The admin pages are available on the main greenstone entry page if you set -

# Set status to "enabled" if you want the Maintenance and
# Administration facility to be available.
status enabled

- in the gsdl/etc/main.cfg file.
