Thanks you both so much.

With the 'index.html' in the root folder I do get redirected to
http://www.archive.necef.in/cgi-bin/library.cgi but it brings a '404 - page
not found' error. Then I tried with the following directives in httpd.conf copied from the Wiki which brings the default Apache page (without the index.html). I have not tried the .htaccess yet but I do not understand why http://www.archive.necef.in/cgi-bin/library.cgi gives 404 error. I know there is a something silly going on but this is my first attempt at Greenstone. Hope you can find the mistake.
Thanks. Jayanta

Since you seem to be familiar with Apache configuration, you could put
a .htaccess file in /usr/local/Greenstone that contains:

RedirectMatch .* http://www.archive.necef.in/cgi-bin/library.cgi

If you
want to access Greenstone directly at the following address :
can try to add an index.html file in your folder with following code :

version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C/DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;
url=http://www.archive.necef.in/cgi-bin/library.cgi" />

<title>My Greenstone Library</title>

<meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow" />

It should
redirect your server root to your Greenstone home page.
