Preliminary Notes for Carol Daly

Born Hamilton, 1944.

Father an engineer, mother a housewife. Father could fix anything, began his own business

then built his own garage aged 58.

One brother, built his own speedboat aged 18.

Went to Sunday School, church camps.

Carol lived in Maeroa, went to Forest Lake Primary school, Maeroa Intermediate, then

Hamilton Technical College - took commercial course.

Listened to radio, music - Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard.

Remembers going to a Howard Morrison show, `do's' at the Hamilton Tech, getting Sir Edmund Hillary's autograph.

Milkbars on a Friday night next door to Woolworths, Dolly Varden for milkshakes.

Rode bikes or walked everywhere.

Very friendly neighbourhoods, ball games in the streets.

Had to be taken to the movies by her mother aged 12 - Civic Theatre, Embassy, Carlton, Regent (the best one).

Could go by herself aged 17, no lipstick, home on the 10:30pm bus.

Balls at Riverlea. different hairdo for each ball (never went to hairdressers), made own ball dresses.

Dances at the Starlight Ballroom, catching bus to Te Kowhai, Matangi.

Motorcycle gangs, coffee after the pictures.

Roller skating at Show Buildings (where Downtown Plaza is now).

Recalls trips to Ruapehu for skiing, keen on water skiing too, went with boyfriend and brother to Lake Karapiro, Raglin, Waikato River.

Went to work at Newton Kings as cheque typist, then Wright Stevensons.

Rode bike to and from work, bought bike on `time payment'.

Remembers building of Founders Theatre.

Fashions of stiffened petticoats under skirts.

Frankton Picture Theatre, saw Marilyn Munroe in "Bus Stop".

Parents into camping so travelled a lot around the North Island, recalls dreadful Coromandel roads.

Going to Auckland, no motorway, no Harbour Bridge so have to catch ferry.

Playing netball at Cobham Drive courts.

Wanted to buy her own house aged 18 at St. Andrews, 10 pounds down for house, 10 pounds down for section. Not recognised as hers as not an engaged/married woman.
