A report on the workshop held on the 9th of February 1999

workshop followed up a UK Government Consultation by the Department of the
Environment, Transport and the Regions and the Department for International
Development on October 13th 1998.

"Sustainable tourism is tourism and associated infrastructures
that, both now and in the future: operate within natural capacities for the
regeneration and future productivity of natural resources: recognise the
contribution that people and communities, customs and lifestyles, make to the
tourism experience; accept that these people must have an equitable share in the
economic benefits of tourism; are guided by the wishes of local people and
communities m the host areas"

tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunity for the
future. It is the management of all resources in such a way that economic,
social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural
integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support
