DG VIII OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION
Directorate-General VIII is responsible for development cooperation between the European Community and developing countries of the Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (ACP) region, a group which includes many of the poorest countries in the world. The objectives of development cooperation are:
1. to foster the sustainable economic and social development of ACP countries;
2. to promote their smooth and gradual integration into the world economy;
3. to campaign against poverty and;
4. to develop and consolidate democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.
UNDP
The United Nations Development Programme is the UNs largest source of grant finance for development cooperation. Its funding is from voluntary contributions of Member States of the United Nations and affiliated agencies. Through a network of 132 country offices, UNDP manages programmes in 174 countries and territories, focusing on four core development themes: poverty elimination, environmental regeneration, job creation, and the advancement of women. Ninety per cent of UNDP's core programme is focused on 66 countries that are home to 90 per cent of the world's extremely poor.
