6.5 Fumigant release

Before any drums, cylinders or other containers of fumigant are opened, the supervising operator should make sure that each operator is wearing the correct protective equipment for the particular operation and that such equipment is in good condition.

Wherever practicable, fumigants should be piped into the area of application from outside. After the fumigant has been released, the operators should check for leaks using detectors as appropriate; where necessary, gaps should be sealed and persons at risk evacuated. Where access to risk areas cannot be prevented by locking doors or by similar measures, watchmen should be posted to prevent unauthorised entry until the danger has passed.
