VOICES IN CYBERSPACE

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) was created as a result of women's advocacy at the 1975 International Women's Year Tribune in Mexico City. Established by the United Nations in 1976 as the Voluntary Fund for the UN Decade for Women, UNIFEM became an autonomous organisation within the UN family in 1985. UNIFEM's mission is to promote the economic and political empowerment of women in developing countries. UNIFEM works to ensure the participation of women in all levels of development planning and practice. UNIFEM also acts as a catalyst within the UN system for efforts to link their needs and concerns to all critical issues on the national, regional and global agendas.
