INTRODUCTION

This chapter provides examples of action by workers and their organizations towards the elimination of child labour. The information is based on surveys, reports, journal articles and booklets produced by trade unionists who are engaged in the fight against child labour, as well as in activities under the ILO's International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) and the ILO Bureau for Workers' Activities (ACTRAV). It is designed for trade union officials at the branch and local chapter level who are considering or planning to start concrete activities to promote the elimination of child labour.

Section 7.1 establishes why child labour is a trade union issue. Section 7.2 describes action already being taken in a range of industries and regions to tight child labour, and joint initiatives with other organizations. Section 7.3 focuses on the opportunities for trade unions to take action in their own industry or locality. These range from raising awareness among fellow workers, to specifying conditions in collective bargaining agreements or codes of conduct, and to lobbying for relevant legislation. They are presented in a ten-point action guide.
