1. Definitions

The meanings of the terms "pest", "pesticide" and "pesticide formulation", as used in this Guide are in line with the definitions laid down in the FAO Guidelines for Legislation Concerning the Registration for Sale and Marketing of Pesticides. These definitions are as follows:

"Pest": any insect, rodent, bird, fish, mollusc, nematode, fungus, weed, micro-organism, virus and/or other kind of plant or animal life which is injurious, troublesome and/or undesirable to crops, stored products, processed foods, wood, clothes fabrics and/or other inanimate objects or which are objectionable from the view point of public health and hygiene. It also includes ectoparasites of Ban, or ectoparasites of animals, except that, by regulations, any pest may be specifically included or excluded.

"Pesticide": any product proposed or used for controlling a "pest" (i.e. including herbicides and fungicides). The term also includes "active ingredients", "adjuvants", and "pesticide formulations" as defined below.

"Pesticide formulation": any mixed or unmixed product sold, supplied, imported for use or used for one or more of the following purposes, namely: for destroying or repelling any pest or for preventing its growth or mitigating its effects; as a plant regulator, defoliant or desicant; or as an adjuvant. The expression should also include any similar product that may be specifically included or excluded as provided for in the definition of "pest".
