Dedication

This lecture is dedicated to the late Ambassador Dr. Wilbert K. Chagula, through whose vision, encouragement, and support, my potential and faculties were realised and developed, when he was Principal of the then Dar es Salaam University College, and subsequently when he served as Chairman, of the then Tanzania National Scientific Research Council (UTAFITI). It hurts so much to imagine that the truly illustrious son of Africa, who had recruited me as a Tutorial Assistant in Botany, on April 1, 1969, and also, in the same year, nominated me for a Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship, to undertake my Ph.D. studies on seaweeds, was called upon by the Lord, within less than one week prior to the delivery of this lecture. May God, rest his soul in PEACE. Amen!
