(introductory text...)
The purpose of this section is to describe the social and economic
background necessary for an understanding of the detailed medical findings. It
seeks to provide a comprehensive account of the ways in which Hurricane David
affected people's lives and thus to place the problems of health (sickness,
injury and death) in their proper perspective. The effects of the hurricane on
housing and cervices, on employment, on agriculture and on food supplies are
considered in turn. Then, the people's own perceptions of the consequences of
the disaster are
described.
